The Bureau of Meteorology's Sean Carson said the heavy fog lingered into the morning, but would gradually clear.

The mercury dipped to minus 4 degrees early on Wednesday and hovered around minus 1 and 0 for much of the morning.

"Because there's cool temperatures and a lot of water in the air, there would have been moisture freezing on people running and on car windscreens," Mr Carson said.

Early flights into and out of Canberra Airport experienced delays, but the disruption to services was minor.

Mr Carson said fog prevented incoming flights landing and outgoing flights were also delayed, as ice needed to be removed from planes before they took off.

There were no major crashes on the capital's roads, but police warned drivers via social media to slow down, turn their fog lights on and drive to the conditions.

May and June are the prime months for fog in the capital, with July and August's cooler temperatures and stronger winds usually keeping white mornings at bay.

"It's pretty typical for this time of year; we just haven't really had one so far this winter," Mr Carson said. "There'll probably be a few more to come."

The chilly weather also brought about five to 10 centimetres of "desperately needed" snow to the NSW ski-fields.

A cold front moving through the ACT from Thursday would bring dry conditions and low humidity that would cause the mercury to dive to a forecast minimum of minus 6 degrees over the weekend.

Canberra experienced a cold start to June, but the average temperature for the month was 1.5 degrees above average, Bureau of Meteorology figures show.

The hottest day was June 12, when the mercury reached 17.5 degrees at Canberra Airport, while the lowest temperature of minus 7 degrees was recorded at the airport on the night of June 2.

Canberra also received slightly more rain than usual during June. More than 55 millimetres fell at Canberra Airport, which was above the long-term average of 40 millimetres.

Mount Ginini copped the most rainfall for the month with 86 millimetres.
