Like many Australians, he was shocked and saddened by the deaths of the young women, 19-year-old Caitlyn Fischer who died when she fell during a cross-country event in Sydney in April and 17-year-old Olivia Inglis who was crushed by her horse during a competition in the Hunter Valley in March.

As a result, Mr Snow has donated $250,000 to Equestrian Australia to help fund a national safety officer who will examine safety equipment, events and other relevant aspects of the sport.

Mr Snow as we told you on Thursday, owns the Willinga Park stock and performance hose stud and equestrian centre at Bawley Point on the South Coast.

The funding provides for a part-time safety office for three years and for Equestrian Australia to increase its investment in research and development that seeks to reduce the risk of injury to riders and horses during the cross country phase of eventing.

Mr Snow has always loved horses but they have become central to his life in the last 10 years as he developed the Willinga Park complex. It recently had its first sales and is moving towards hosting dressage, showjumping and cross-country events.

"I just wanted to ensure we are doing the very, very utmost to ensure young people in the sport are competing in as safe an environment as possible," he said, of his donation.

Equestrian Australia's safety program is a partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation which is the only sports body where donors received a tax deduction for donations to registered fundraising programs. Equestrian Australia chief executive officer, Paula Ward said Mr Snow's donation would have a significant, positive and lasting impact on the sport.

"I would like to thank Mr Snow for his generosity and support for this very important area," she said." Equestrian Australia is aiming to implement a world class safety program, to ensure everyone involved can compete at all levels in the safest environment possible and this will give us the best possible platform to achieve this."

Ms Ward said specific projects will be scoped over time.

"Projects will be developed by Equestrian Australia in consultation with Mr Snow. We hope to be able to engage with our overseas counterparts, work collaboratively on new initiatives and draw on International expertise as required."
