The Gilkatho Cappuccino Price Index study issued on Wednesday found the average price for a take away coffee in the ACT was $3.46. Dine in cappuccinos at Canberra cafes cost an average of $3.49.
Surveying more than 1100 cafes in Australian capital cities, the study found the average cost of a takeaway coffee nationally was $3.50.
Canberra’s prices are higher than Sydney and Melbourne, and Perth was the most expensive city with the average cappuccino price reaching $3.89.
Sydney’s average take away price is $3.22, and Melbourne reached $3.37.
The study showed a fall in coffee bean prices had not made a morning coffee any cheaper for consumers.
"What's clear, however, is the fact that what people pay for a coffee has nothing to do with the cost of coffee [beans]," Gilkatho managing director Wayne Fowler said.
"The selling price continues to increase in spite of coffee prices decreasing. This is a pretty good indication that the price of coffee beans tends not to be passed on to the consumer."
International figures show Australians will consume 2.7kg of coffee per person in 2013.
