Three people, including a 50-year-old man from Deakin and his 49-year-old wife, were taken to hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a car crash near Jugiong.

The Canberra couple had pulled into a breakdown lane on the Hume Highway, about 400 metres north of Audley Road at about 4.40pm to change a flat tyre on the trailer they were towing.

Ten minutes later a northbound truck crashed into their 4WD then rolled onto its side further down the highway.

It took emergency services several hours to free the 38-year-old Melbourne truck driver from his vehicle, and he was then flown to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

The Deakin man was taken to Canberra Hospital with a broken leg, and his wife was taken to Yass District Hospital with chest and ankle injuries.
