First-time entrepreneur Trish Smith will launch the slim and compact carry-on luggage product through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign starting in March.

Airpocket is designed to hold "everything you need for every step of the journey" and fits in the seat-back pocket on planes.

Mrs Smith found some similar products were designed to hold items such as an iPad, phone, magazine, reading glasses, wallets and other flight essentials, but were too big to fit into the seat-back pocket.

Other bags could fit into the pocket but could not hold as many items.

"All the other bags designed to hold all of these things aren't designed thinking 'let's put this into the seat-back pocket'… It's about being organised for your trip, having everything you need and not leaving anything behind," she said.

Airpocket is made of neoprene, the soft material in wetsuits.

The idea came to Mrs Smith as she watched a frustrated queue behind a woman on a plane.

"She came into the plane with a great big handbag. She was just tossing things onto the seat and was rummaging around looking for all the bits and pieces, creating this huge queue of people," she said.

"I just thought there was an easier solution than to struggle like that and hold people up."

Holding everything important in one place, Airpocket can also ease anxiety about leaving items behind when disembarking, Mrs Smith said.

Usually working in recruitment, Mrs Smith had no previous experience in product development. She admits it was unlike her to put everything aside for a spontaneous idea, but her support networks helped her persevere.

"I've had a lot of help from around Canberra," she said.

"It's a great community, everyone's really supportive and I think that's really important when you're really not sure what you're doing and you can ask anybody. Everyone's really enthusiastic."

But Mrs Smith said she still needs more support and she will launch her Kickstarter campaign on March 3.

She has 30 days to prove the Airpocket's worth. If her fundraising goal - which she cannot yet reveal - is not met, then she will "go away and have a bit of a cry and think about plan B".

In this case, pledgers who have ordered an Airpocket will not lose any money.

The retail price is estimated to be $50, but the campaign price will be cheaper as an incentive for people to get behind the product.

As for her advice to anyone else contemplating whether to pursue a spark of inspiration, Mrs Smith said: "It all boils down to, why not? Why shouldn't I do this?"
