For one family, that means uprooting life in Canberra to live in Utah for up to eight months to take part in a treatment option that is unavailable in Australia.

Alyssa Krause's son Jude, 6, has an allergy to tree nuts, which can cause a severe anaphylactic reaction.

As a last resort to ensure Jude becomes allergy free, she will travel with Jude to the United States next month for him to undergo oral immunotherapy (OIT) at a clinic just outside Salt Lake City.

"I can't sit on my hands knowing that there's something out there to improve his quality of life," Ms Krause said.

"We're quite positive though that this will have a positive outcome over a long period of time."

As part of the OIT treatment, Jude will undergo a personalised program where he will have to eat small amounts of tree nuts every day, first in a liquid form, then as a powder, before finally advancing to small doses of the solid food.

The Utah-based clinic has boasted a success rate of curing more than 90 per cent of its patients.

"Every day Jude has to have it, and then he can't exercise for two to three hours, as that can bring on anaphylaxis," Ms Krause said.

"Each week, if his body can tolerate it, then the dose is increased at the clinic and he is monitored."

In order to undergo the treatment, Jude is being taken out of school for the eight-month period, with Ms Krause leaving behind her small business.

"Jude's school has been very understanding about the situation," she said.

"We're going to be having to leave my partner and Jude's father behind, and that's going to be hard.

"It's going to be a very emotional journey for us, because Jude has to eat his poison every day."

While food challenges conducted with a specialist in Australia has helped Jude to get rid of an allergy to peanuts, similar methods have been unable to do the same for his tree nut allergy.

Ms Krause said the OIT treatment was a last-ditch effort for Jude to become allergy free.

"We just wish we didn't have to live in fear and carry around an EpiPen everywhere with us," she said.

"Jude's getting to the age now where there are lots of birthday parties and friends are wanting to have sleepovers, and that's a worrying time for us, because we would have to train all his friend's families in how to use EpiPens in the case of an emergency."
