But it's a real joy for 17-year-old Tess Healey-Smith to play with her father Cam Hall in their band, My Dad and I.

"It's a great thing," she said.

"He raised me. We've had such a great relationship since day one."

The pair have always played music together but been more of a professional unit since Tess was 14, performing indie pop.

"Oh, I'm so grateful," Cam said, of having the shared interest with his daughter.

"It's wild.

"On Valentine's Day we were rehearsing and she said, 'Dad, I want to write a song for Jarred', her boyfriend.

"It was 9.30 at night, I was exhausted and said, 'You've got 45 minutes to write and record it.' And we did.

"It just kind of happens like that. She's incredibly talented, you just get blown away."

The pair are about to embark on a tour and release their first single, If You Love, on March 3, when it will be available on iTunes.

They will celebrate the release with a gig at The Front Gallery and Cafe in Lyneham, on March 10, with all proceeds from the night going to A Future for Freyja, a fundraising campaign in aid of Canberra five-year-old Freyja Christiansen who is battling cancer.

Cam also runs Mojo Guitar Teachers in schools including Yarralumla Primary, which Freyja attends and so too does his nine-year-old twin sons Sam and Luca.

"I'd taught Freyja's sisters Brynn and Inge and was about to start teaching Freyja," he said.

"I feel absolutely gutted for the family so you want to do all you can and for me, that means action, it means doing something."

Tess, a year 12 student at Narrabundah College, is more than on board.

"Anything we can do to help, we will," she said.

"I want to do as much as I can, it's such a sad thing."
