The hospital has called on the Canberra community to sponsor a decorated Christmas tree as it aims to more than double the number installed across its wards and clinical and service areas from previous years.

The Christmas Tree Truck, which usually deals in delivering and installing live trees, wants to provide up to 35 hired artificial trees ranging from 4 to 15 feet (1.22 to 4.57 metres) in height.

The eyes of Harley Cusbert, 6, lit up as he spotted a 2.5 metre tree on Friday, a welcome distraction after three weeks in hospital dealing with his ongoing bowel obstruction.

"I like the star on top," he said.

The Cooma boy's mother, Michelle Boyd, said her son had a catheter fitted last Tuesday and hoped to go home on Monday.

"He loves Christmas trees and it's been very good to see that face when it came out - the last three weeks have been a drain."

Trees range from $149 for the smallest to $5099 for the largest for a potential corporate backer.

Canberra Hospital Foundation chairwoman Deb Rolfe called for a quick response, with the hospital wanting the trees all installed by early December.

"Choose a tree for an area that means something to you," she said.

"Sponsors will have their name on the website and on a sign near the tree."

The Christmas Tree Truck will separately be donating 10 per cent of the value of any purchased tree to the Canberra Hospital Foundation when buyers mention the foundation.

Ms Rolfe said artificial trees were used for the hospital because infection control was an issue in the ward and clinical areas.
