The publication has led the Canberra Liberals to make fresh calls for a security review of the jail as inmates continue to gain uncontrolled access to the internet.

Harley Stott's social media activity paused after he was locked up in the Alexander Maconochie Centre in February.

But it resumed again on April 10 and updated regularly – often late at night – until May 1.

The activity included status updates, and uploading pictures of himself posing with convicted standover man Anthony Catanzariti.

Catanzariti is currently serving an almost seven year sentence for assaulting and torturing a drug dealer over a $2500 debt.

ACT Corrective Services confirmed the pictures had been taken inside an AMC cell and the grey polo shirt worn by Stott was standard issue clothing at the prison.

It is unknown if the men share a cell.

The social media posts are the latest in a number of security breaches where prisoners have accessed the internet from behind bars.

Prisoners have previously used smuggled phones to update social media accounts, upload prison fights, and allegedly run a drug ring.

Corrective Services figures show 48 prohibited devices had been seized over the 20 months until February.

But the authorities have had some success in the fight against contraband, intercepting a delivery of drugs and electronics late last month.

Opposition Corrections spokesman Andrew Wall likened the fresh incident to groundhog day, and renewed his call for a security review of the jail.

Mr Wall said the security breach raised far more insidious concerns than merely posting pictures onto social media.

"If they're posting pictures, what other criminal activities are they organising? What else are they pulling the strings on from within the AMC?" Mr Wall said.

"A communication device means criminal conduct can continue and that presents an unacceptable risk to the community."

The member for Brindabella said ACT Corrective Services needed either "a change of minister, or a change of attitude".

"We're about to increase capacity, are the failings of the original facility going to be continued into the accommodation that is being built?" Mr Wall said.

"We've gone beyond a series of indiscretions and this is becoming a cultural legacy at the jail.

"Until such time as a genuine attempt is made to address the security failings at the jail, we will continue to see these breaches occur."

But Corrections Minister Shane Rattenbury said the challenge of detecting contraband was not unique to the ACT.

"As minister, I know the staff at the prison work very hard to intercept and prevent contraband to maintain the security of the facility and keep all detainees safe," Mr Rattenbury said.

"While we're not always successful, we continue to adapt our strategies to prevent contraband from entering the AMC."

Mr Rattenbury said jail staff worked with ACT Policing on drug and contraband interdiction, which included security measures such as ACTCS intelligence staff, officers and the K-9 Unit working together to deter and intercept contraband before its entry into the AMC.

"This involves lawfully monitoring of the prisoner phone system and other communications, including social media," he said.

"ACT Corrective Services conducts searches of detainee cells and common areas on a regular basis; there is an ongoing effort to prevent contraband entering the AMC and locate it in the event that it does.

"The recent apprehension of a man … who was seen close to the perimeter fence of the AMC is an example of ongoing work of ACTCS to intercept contraband."
