The Fairbairn Park Circuit was renamed 'Circuit Mark Webber' after the 2015 FIA World Endurance Champion and former Grand Prix driver on Friday.

The ceremony, which saw ACT Planning Minister Mick Gentleman unveil the newly named track with Mark's parents Allen and Diane, coincided with the first day of the NSW State Karting Championships.

It was also a milestone in the club's $3.6 million master plan to revamp the facility, which was in part funded by $143,000 from the ACT government.

Mark's father Allen said he held very fond memories of the club, where his son discovered his love of racing at the age of 13 in 1991.

"It was always a lot of fun, and relatively cheap compared to what we had to do further on in his career," Mr Webber said.

"It's the first time I've been out here in a good few years, but there are about 40 to 50 people here today that I've remained friends with."

As friendships have stood the test of time, so have the feelings of fear and angst when their son hits the track - at least for his mother.

"I used to worry about him a fair bit out on the track, and still do," Mrs Webber said.

"While it's easier for dad [Allen], it's a bit more stressful for mum [herself]. Every time it's stressful."

The proud parents hoped the renovated track would draw more carting groups and racers from around Australia and further prove that Queanbeyan was a hotbed of sporting talent.

Mr Gentleman, who was a racer himself, hoped it would become a world-class international race course.

"The track gives people the opportunity to start karting at age 14," he said.

"And then they can go through that process, learn the skills of car control, and then start racing at a larger level later on if they want to."

He also praised the economic benefits of karting, which gives $2.46M to the ACT economy each year.

As part of the refurbishment, the club will extend the length of the track to 1.2km and install-state-of-the-art viewing stands. Construction is set to start in the coming months.
