Stephen Raymond Stubbs, 63, is facing 15 charges in the ACT Supreme Court, relating to allegations he dishonestly demanded $30,000 from Anne Duffy and $4000 from Legal Aid ACT, a funding service for low-income people facing criminal charges.

"It has been confirmed that yesterday [Stubbs] was admitted to Goulburn Hospital," Justice John Burns told the jury on Wednesday.

He said the court was making enquiries with doctors, but "it is not abundantly clear at what time he will be able to return to the ACT."

Justice Burns released the jury until Friday.

Stubbs' charges stem from events in 2008 and 2009.

His client Alexander Duffy, then 19, was granted Legal Aid after he was charged with assault and acts endangering life, charges later upgraded to conspiracy to commit murder.

Lawyers are not allowed to accept outside money for a matter after it has been granted public funding, and it's alleged Stubbs kept both parties in the dark about each other's contributions.

Stubbs does not deny he accepted the money from Ms Duffy, save for a disputed cash payment of $5000, but has argued it was for separate matters, and work done outside the grant of funding.

The trial has already heard six days of evidence.
