A DAY LIKE TOMORROW
(Rooksmere Records/Planet)
4 stars
Fabian Holland is, with Blair Dunlop, one of the leading lights on the British folk scene. A Day Like Tomorrow confirms that luminosity of talent. Holland's touch on the guitar strings is so sensitive it's like sunlight on a river, floating and gliding on the currents, and his voice blends in and out to carry the melody and story to its conclusion. One of his great strengths is interpretation, which he showed on his previous album with a reworking of Skip James' Hard Time Killing Floor Blues, and here does so with Nobody's Fault But Mine and House Carpenter. Equally, his own songs are mesmerising, a standout being Welcome to the Magic Show.
