When Ashley Jameson Eriksmoen was growing up in California, the family home was in a constant state of flux. There were always extensions and renovations going on, and her mother had a yen for redecorating. Once, deep in her 1980s country life phase, her mother went out and bought 20 different straw hats in one day, and arranged them to look like they had been lovingly collected from far and wide over years and years. But before long, she'd moved onto blue-and-white porcelain, and the hats were gone.
