Aaron Cash, co-choreographer of Ballet Revolución with Roclan Gonzalez Chavez, says the dance show's third tour of Australia contains "80 per cent new material and 20 per cent is stuff we've performed before".

He says the show is "a fusion of dance styles - classical, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop with more Cuban folkdance, mambo, a bit of salsa - it's high-energy, exciting [and] theatrical" with big jumps and twists and turns.providing plenty of thrills.

The 20 Cuban dancers range in age from 19 to mid-30s - the average is about 25 - and trained at Cuba's Escuela Nacional de Arte, with its faculty of modern dance, and at the Escuela Nacional de Ballet for classical dance.

Cash says he and Chavez divided up the choreography evenly between them - broadly speaking, Cash was focusing more on the contemporary and classical side of things, Chavez on the more specifically Cuban as well as commercial elements.

"It was pretty egalitarian," Cash says.

"We each had a different aesthetic approach - it seemed to work well for both of us."

The result, he thinks, is the best version of Ballet Revolución in the eight years he;s been involved with it.

For Brisbane-born Cash, 48, Ballet Revolución is just one part of a long and multi-faceted career as a dancer, actor, choreographer, teacher and artistic consultant. He began dancing as a child and later studied with Ross Coleman - "he set me up" - before moving to the US at the age of 19 where he has been based since although he says he "comes back all the time to Australia".

He was picked by choreographer Kenny Ortega to be one of the dancers in Cher's Love Hurts Tour and ended up becoming her lead dancer.

"It was 10 years of my life," he says, "and one of the highlights of my career."

"I never experienced a diva moment with her - she's a great person."

He also worked with dancers Twyla Tharp and Mikhail Baryshnikov and was one of the original Tap Dogs as well as appearing in films such as Titanic, Hook, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and television shows including Scrubs.

Cash has consulted in a variety of media, from his work with Wet Design (the company responsible for the Belagio fountain in Las Vegas) on their fountain at Steven Wynn's latest luxury hotel in Macao, China to serving as the personal tango coach for Jolie Richardson on the TV series Nip/Tuck.

In 2014 he was a judge on the Australian series of So You Think You Can Dance and says he "loved it", noting that a lot of the dancers on it have gone on to other things.

Most recently, he's been working on Los Angeles as an actor in a cafe cabaret called Nuit Blanche.

"It's a dinner theatre experience that costs $300 a head set in the 1920s in Paris. I play the cabaret show host, Jean Marceau - I get killed in the end."

It calls more on his acting than his dance skills, and he uses his two French daughters for dialect coaching.

"They're my biggest critics."
