Known as Little Brussels, the Kingston cafe shut its doors in March, several months after its 10-year anniversary.

The venue's sub-lease is now up for purchase.

Business owner Michael O'Brien, also the executive director of leading stadia hospitality company the O'Brien Group, said the beer market had changed since the cafe opened.

"The craft beer has been an evolution – the European and imported beers have been under attack from the Australian beer," he said.

"There was a time going back 10 years where we [Belgian beers] were it.

"I think it was still trading all right, but the market has broadened."

Mr O'Brien said a lack of opportunities at Canberra's sporting stadiums due to established contracts had also led the business to focus on interstate growth.

"We have made our decision as a company that the opportunities in Canberra to secure the exclusive rights in Manuka Stadium and the stadium where the Brumbies and Raiders are won't be there in the next few years," he said.

The O'Brien Group has sole and exclusive food and catering rights at stadiums including the Gabba in Brisbane, AAMI Park in Melbourne and Eden Park in New Zealand.

Mr O'Brien said the Kingston venue could be operated under the Belgian Beer Cafe brand or shift to a different hospitality option.

"Moving forward it might continue as western European or some other national craft beer use," he said.

Well-known for dishes including the moules frites, a pot of mussels served with shoestring chips, the Jardine Street venue has eight-and-a-half years (including option period) left on its sub-lease.
