The iconic Canberra burger restaurant is turning 10 this month and will host an epic birthday party on Saturday, March 30, to celebrate.
The milestone birthday party will be held at their Kingston location at the Canberra Glassworks, and will feature live entertainment including bands, performers and DJs, lawn games, a photo booth, a huge scavenger hunt and more.
Plus three hours of free burgers.
The party is a way for Brodburger to say thank you to Canberra for supporting it over the past 10 years, according to co-owner Sascha Brodbeck.
“The Canberra community has shown us constant support since we first opened our caravan in 2009, where customers would wait for up to two hours for a burger,” Mr Brodbeck said.
“Luckily, we have expanded to more locations, so our wait times are nowhere near as long, but we still owe so much to our loyal customers.
“They are the reason our business has been able to expand and flourish over the years. Their support has helped us overcome many challenges and get to where we are today."
Brodburger has had an interesting - and some might say very "Canberra" - history. It is as much about planning as it is about food.
The business started operating out of a little red caravan at Bowen Park, next to Lake Burley Griffin, in 2009. It soon came into conflict with the National Capital Authority, which wanted it to work from a purpose-built kiosk because the van did not comply with the aesthetic demands of the National Capital Plan. The authority later offered to allow the van to keep operating under its hawker's licence as long as it was removed after each day's business. Brodburger found a fan in then chief minister Jon Stanhope in 2010 who declared the van was no eyesore at all.
''I support the Brodburger location, the van, the service they provide and it's enormously popular. The people of Canberra are certainly voting with their feet and their stomach,'' Mr Stanhope said, at the time.
In the end, the ACT government brokered a deal for Brodburger to move into the Canberra Glassworks in Kingston in 2012.
Brodburger’s 10th birthday party will have a community focus, embracing and showcasing local suppliers, local talent and other community members who helped bring the event together.
“We’re all about supporting local, as supporting local is what has built the Brodburger brand,” co-owner Joelle Bou-Jaude said.
The event will also raise funds for local charities, with customers on the day encouraged to make a donation in return for the free food and entertainment on offer.
“We’re excited to support worthy causes and give something back to the community while we celebrate ten years. Along with three hours of free burgers, the event will also include an epic scavenger hunt with plenty of prizes, and live roaming performances like acrobats and jugglers," Joelle said.
“Canberra Glassworks will also open to the public on the night while one of their glass artists creates two amazing glass burgers. One of these will be raffled off on the night, with proceeds going towards all charities involved."
Brodburger’s 10th birthday will kick off at their Kingston venue at 5pm on Saturday, March 30. The scavenger hunt will be from 3pm to 5pm. The three hours of free burgers will start at 5.30pm.
