Your Shot gives budding DJs the chance at stardom on the club scene – contestants don't need any experience and are given weeks of training and mentoring throughout the competition.

They perform 25-minute sets for the judges and the winner gets the opening gig for international star DJ Tiesto at a Las Vegas nightclub.

It's a homegrown Australian competition which started in Sydney and has since expanded to Melbourne, Brisbane and now the United States.

Fernandez, a Canberra lad who's been DJing across Australia for the past 15 years, has been involved in the competition since the beginning and is moving to LA for the next couple of months to mentor contestants.

He said Your Shot offered people a foot in the door on the club scene and previous competition winners had gone on to do big things.

"DJ Tigerlily is one of the biggest ones and she didn't win it, she was a runner-up in 2011. She's signed with one of the biggest agencies in the States and she's touring," he said.

The opportunity to work on the American version of the competition came up when Fernandez was speaking to Your Shot's founder, Steve Pillemer.

"It's been a goal of mine to move across to the States for my career. I mentioned to him that I was planning on being over there and he said that would be perfect, someone who knows our competition and knows how it works and has done a lot of training before," he said.

Six weeks ago he got the go-ahead and has spent the past week scrambling to organise the sudden move to the United States ahead of the opening auditions on the weekend of May 16.

Fernandez, who was named DJ/Music Producer of the Year at the Budweiser Music Awards in 2013, will be teaching contestants everything from how to use the equipment to club etiquette.

He said he would be looking for people who could create an original sound.

"You can train a whole group of people to beat mix in a short period of time and if that's all they do then they kind of blend in with the rest of the competitors. But the people that really stand out are the ones that have an original style, an original sound to them," he said.

"Rather than just mixing records together they're using some of the effects units and perhaps laying a capella vocals over the top of the records and creating live remixes rather than just beat mixing. Those are the kinds of people that tend to stand out."
