The Realm precinct in Barton will be transformed into a hub of stalls, food, live entertainment and a pop-up bar, with the precinct's businesses all getting involved.
Natalie Weber first discussed the idea with her friend Marissa Christian when she moved back to Canberra after a decade living in Sydney.
"Coming back to where I grew up, it really struck a chord with me that Canberra was changing and there were so many creative people here but not really many outlets for them to start building their brands and expanding their business without having to pay astronomical fees," said Weber.
Weber said the duo wanted to create something a bit different from what was already offered in the Canberra market scene.
"We want to create an experience, not just a market.
``With Marissa being a stallholder at lots of markets in Canberra and Sydney, her experience was that some people are generally standing around holding bags looking for a place to sit," she said.
"We thought why not enhance the experience for people like that but also mainly provide a platform for emerging designers to get their show on the road."
Existing Realm food outlets Ostani, Malamay and Maple and Clove will cater the food for the event and a pop-up bar at Maple and Clove will serve juices, smoothies, jugs of pimms and frozen margaritas.
The market will also be an opportunity to have a first taste from LiLo Tang Japanese, which is to open in the Realm precinct in mid-January.
"The food and drinks will definitely enhance that festival feel we're going for," she said.
Along with co-founder Christian, who will be selling her label Wink Jewellery, the markets will include fashion, homewares, handbags, menswear and goodies for kids.
Night Market Canberra is on Friday, December 12 from 4-9pm at Realm Park, Barton.
