SUMMERNATS Four days of high-octane entertainment with national and international car enthusiasts. Witness burnout and driving competitions, top bands, stunt spectaculars and fireworks, plus more than 150 retail and trade exhibitors. Friday night sees a music lineup of Havana Brown and Bliss N Eso take to the stage. Friday 8.30am-midnight, Saturday 8.30am-1am, Sunday 8.30am - 5pm. Exhibition Park in Canberra. From 7.30pm ILLUMINATING THE MEMORIAL Starting tonight The Australian War Memorial will be illuminated during summer late-night openings of the Commemorative Area. Take the opportunity to pay your respects during the 100-year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. Volunteer guides will provide insights and stories from the Roll of Honour. Hear the recorded voices of Australian schoolchildren reciting the names of servicemen and servicewomen who appear on the World War I Roll of Honour. The names of those who lost their lives serving our country in that war will be projected onto the Memorial's dome after sunset. Until January 31. Fridays and Saturdays, 7.30-9.30pm. Free entry.

5.30pm SUMMER SOUNDS The Australian National Botanic Gardens will come alive every Saturday and Sunday evening in January with the sounds of blues and grooves, big band beats, rockabilly, jazz and more. Bring your picnic, plus there will be gourmet food and cold beverages for sale, and kids' activities. Saturdays and Sundays until January 25. 5.30-7.30pm. 10am KIDS' CORNER Kids (and big kids) can do colouring in and origami based on the new film Big Hero 6. There will also be balloons to take home. Kids' corner is free and no bookings are required. Just turn up on the day and play. 10am-1pm at Dendy Canberra.
