The 26-year-old electrician, better known as Bill, was born and bred in Canberra. He had a great love for horses and the outdoors.

"He had a very real sense of larrikinism about him and he could talk the hind leg off a donkey. He was very charismatic, very good looking," his partner Leigh Nelson said.

Mr Spencer was long boarding with his friend in Narooma along a flat path and was found lying on the ground.

"He wasn't doing stunts or anything. He was just cruising along and he fell and hit his head and that was it really."

"We think he might have had an aneurism causing him to fall."

Mr Spencer was airlifted to Canberra Hospital where part of his skull was removed to relieve pressure on his brain but "it was too catastrophic an injury".

"At that stage, we knew there was pretty much nothing that could be done. It was such a freak accident; there was not a mark on his body. He'd just hit his head and that was it," Ms Nelson said.

Mr Spencer's family was then faced with the choice to donate his organs, but Ms Nelson said there was no real need for discussion about what was going to happen.

"We knew he just would have wanted to keep on helping and he wouldn't have seen the sense in being buried with organs that could have saved lives.

"He was a really giving person."

In 2014, more than 1000 Australians received donations from less than 400 organ and tissue donors.

DonateLife explained the process to Bill's family of finding a match for his organs, but it was still very hard to undergo.

"They were really good with us through most of the process," Ms Nelson said.

It was difficult with all the specialists present and after his family said their final goodbyes, Mr Spencer's body was immediately taken away to have his organs removed.

"But we understood that for it to happen and for it to be successful for the recipients it would have to be done quickly," Ms Nelson said.

Ms Nelson said she tried to separate the two events, saying her partner's death was something she would never get over but having helped save peoples' lives was a real positive.

"[It was] really hard, but [I] do not regret the decision we made."

According to DonateLife, there are 1500 people on transplant waiting lists in Australia at any one time, and just one organ and tissue donor can "transform the lives of 10 or more people".

Ms Nelson said she had received a lot of support from DonateLife and made some friends through them, as well as through Aussie Transplant Mates, a partner of DonateLife.

Ms Nelson also encouraged people to consider becoming organ donors, to get their donation card and to tell everyone around them.

"The biggest thing is that your family has the last say. Make sure your final wish is carried out because you won't be here to talk."

Ms Nelson shared her story ahead of DonateLife Week which will be held from August 2–9. There are a number of activities planned throughout the week to encourage people to get talking about organ donation.
