This fluffy guy won our hearts the moment we set eyes on him waddling around a paddock like an overstuffed sofa on four spindly legs at Mulligans Flat. He'd somehow escaped the shearers for about six years and had been wandering around in the wild getting woollier and woollier. When Chris was finally shorn, he broke the Guinness World Record for heaviest sheep fleece with a 41.1kg whopper. He went so viral he got his own line of RSPCA-branded Chris the Sheep merch. What a dude.

Canberra Times reader Graham Smith sent in this awesome photo of a posse of wood ducks merrily swimming through Dickson Pool in November. Mumma duck, in clear contravention of pool etiquette, seems pretty bent on changing lanes. Graham helped get the ducklings out of the pool and was rewarded by an attack from mother duck. But this picture lives on forever and for that we thank Graham.

If you were driving around town in the afternoon of March 31 this you might have found yourself behind this guy - Shaba the giraffe, making his way from Mogo Zoo to a new life in Canberra. Keepers had prepared a home for Shaba in the same enclosure with female giraffe Mzungu and hoped that love would blossom between the two.

They're our mortal enemies come August each year, but the magpies in Gungahlin took it a bit far this year. In one case, a magpie attacked a two-year-old in a pram, "menacing" the child's mouth with its beak and claws to steal food. Rangers were forced to put down seven magpies after the incident, and said their behaviour was caused by humans feeding them in the park.

Stephen King was right all along. Maybe don't feed the birds guys.

When did we start having so many snakes? They were everywhere this year. Wildlife rangers were called to remove them from carparks, building sites, garden sheds - some unlucky people even found them in their offices. The Therapeutic Goods Administration and Canberra Hospital fought back with warning signs. Cyclists across social media shared advice on learning to "bunny-hop" so the snake strikes your tyre and not your leg. But they weren't all too concerned about attacking humans - Canberra Times reader Andrew Fahy snapped a duo of brown snakes "romancing and dancing" at Jerrabomberra Wetlands.

It was all certainly enough to have us taking a closer look around when we were out and about.

You cannot make up cuteness like this. Shadow the brush tailed rock wallaby is basically one of Canberra's most incredibly adorable animals. He loves to climb all over his human friends, nibble their hands and hop into their laps (seriously, watch the video). But there's a serious side to his story - there are just 80 of his kind left in the world and rangers at Tidbinbilla are working hard to save the species with a captive breeding program.
