Guilty Pleasures in Dickson
Ah, it's a fertile premise for an exhibition, is it not? Emerging artist Shaun Hayes has a new solo show at ANCA exploring contemporary ideas and processes in the context of traditional ceramics. Since graduating from the ANU School of Art two years ago, Hayes has been preoccupied with altering the traditional ceramic forms of plates, vases and figurines to make something new: "An elegant tea-set with a nostalgic brown glaze is combined with the form of a T-rex figurine, teeth-baring head standing in for the spout, and the T-rex's infamously feeble arms protruding from the sides of the teacups," for example. Guilty Pleasures, by Shaun Hayes, is showing at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place, Dickson, until March 15. And ANCA is open late on Saturday February 28 for its open day: a chance to meet the artists, look at open studios, peruse art for sale, hear music, eat food and drink wine. The day kicks off at 3pm and will be opened by yours truly. And it's free! Stop by, and stay awhile!

Friday night heaven
Feel like doing something dreamy and baroque on Friday night? The Sixteen, described as "one of the world's greatest vocal ensembles", will perform its signature blend of early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance, Baroque and early classical music as well as 20th and 21st-century music at Llewellyn Hall on Friday, March 6 at 7.30pm. New works by Sarit Cohen
Canberra ceramicist Sarit Cohen has a new exhibition opening this week at Kaori Gallery, a body of work of mixed media "concerned with formal expression between materiality, form and colour. In this body of work she is demonstrating her ability to filter and synthesise a complex variety of found objects as they relate to the materiality of porcelain". And her work is exquisite and unique – the show promises to be well worth the visit. New works by Sarit Cohen opens on March 4 at Canberra City Framing Gallery / Kaori Gallery, cnr London Circuit & Hobart Place, Canberra City, and runs until April 4.
New shows at PhotoAccess
Three news shows opened this week at PhotoAcces in Manuka. China – Eighteen Days 1978, by Bill Lucas, is a series of black and white silver gelatin photographs documenting a visit Lucas made to China after the end of the Cultural Revolution: "A former psychiatrist, Lucas depicts surgeries and offices, filled with now-antiquated Chinese and Western medical paraphernalia, as well as landscapes, architectural photographs and images of everyday life with an eye for their formal beauty." In Stephen Best's Out West is a series of panoramic landscapes captured in various part of western NSW, using a pinhole camera: "This process bends and blurs the edges of the image, creating landscapes that are enigmatic and slightly strange." And Kai Wasikowski presents Taking Liberties, combining two bodies of work – Spent Pleasures and Handscapes: "Wasikowski's works are propositions to the viewer invoking notions of guilt on a social, personal and environmental level, particularly as we exist as consumers in a digital world." All three shows are running at PhotoAccess, Manuka Arts Centre, Manuka Circle, Griffith, until March 22. Hear Kai Wasikowski in conversation on March 1 at 2pm. Body in the Landscape at M16
Two new shows exploring the human figure in varying landscapes is set to open this week at M16. Canberra artist Felicity Green explores What's Inside a Girl, with "a suite of lyrical images that explore the female body, nature and the sublime as a metaphor, alluding to the northern European Romantic tradition of landscape painting". I love that the exhibition title is both a sexy double-entendre and a reference to a 1970s song by New York punk band The Cramps. And The Heart is a Lonely Hunter for Julie-Anne Armstrong-Roper and Lis Johnson, who have used traditional painting and sculpting methods and techniques to bring a contemporary sensibility to their timeless subjects - landscape and figure. "They address existential themes such as the isolation of the individual soul, as experienced in the vastness of landscape or participating in the daily grind of urban life." Both exhibitions open on March 5 and run until March 22 at M16 Artspace, 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith. Armstrong-Roper and Johnson will speak about their works on May 21 and 22 from 2pm.
