Idol-ising
We're quite overcome by the whole idea of burlesque which is kind of sexy but not overtly so which probably makes it even sexier still. Does that make sense? The Canberra heat of Burlesque Idol is on tonight at the Canberra Theatre Centre, where our very own emerging talent will strut their stuff. From Autumn Temptress, who warms against the winter chills with her soft curves and fusion of contemporary, avant-garde and Middle Eastern dance, to Possum Galore, known for her comedic neo burlesque routines and her antics with stuffed possums and grapes that makes audiences gag for more. Crème de la crème
Replete with dramas, thrillers, romantic comedies and haunting stories of bygone years, the 2017 Alliance Française French Film Festival runs until April 4 at Palace Cinemas. This exuberant event is held by the Alliance Française in association with the Embassy of France in Australia. For the Festival's 28th season, artistic director, Philippe Platel, who is celebrating his first year at the helm, has sourced a bewitching selection of 45 features and documentaries that celebrates the "crème de la crème" of contemporary French cinema by blending the work of established filmmakers with that of France's cinematic stars of tomorrow. We're paying attention to Marc Etherington's Take me home exhibition, currently running at Michael Reid Sydney. Take me home is a quasi narrative, inspired by 20th century American detective genre films. At the centre of the narrative is a nameless detective who witnesses the death of his wife and is again reunited with her as he ascends through clouds, after undergoing a cathartic 'journey' of revenge. There are references to True Grit and also echoes of science fiction, thriller and horror in this body of work. Etherington has been an Archibald finalist twice, and his paintings are quirky and engaging, it was his description of his own exhibition - "Take me home is an exhibition of big paintings. It's about monsters and detectives and love and loss, and shit..." - that won us over. Love it. Michael Reid Sydney, 105 Kippax Street, Surry Hills.

Canberra is hosting an international conference of bookbinders from March 25-27 at the University of Canberra organised by the Canberra Craft Bookbinders' Guild. The conference promises to be an inspiring and exciting event. More than 100 binders will be attending from overseas, New Zealand and many parts of Australia. Guest speakers from Australia and overseas will cover many topics relevant to contemporary book binders and demonstrate a variety of techniques. There are two exhibitions of book binding in conjunction with the conference. At CraftACT there is an exhibition of 45 contemporary bindings from around the world - it is open until March 25. At the Civic Library there is an exquisite exhibition of miniature books, with a maximum size of 75mm. There are doll's house books measuring just 15mm. Workshop
Internationally acclaimed artist G.W.Bot is returning to Goulburn to deliver a one day intensive workshop to coincide with the exhibition Three Ways: G.W.Bot, Meg Buchanan and Anita McIntyre. In this workshop you will develop your own language through which you can express the unique peculiarities of the Australian environment. In the morning you will explore the possibilities of drawing, in the afternoon painting and throughout the day learn how to express your ideas and concepts through art making and speaking about your work. Get your nature on
Based on the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoko (forest bathing) the creative team at Hotel Hotel presents "The Ritual of Bush Bathing", a series of seasonal bush walks to get you back in among the trees and the birds. Developed with Ngunnawal man Tyronne Bell who will lead the walks, the first one will head up Mt Majura but we're assured it's an easy walk on an inclined track. The walks take in the natural landscapes – learning through touch, taste and smell, and some stretches will be walked in silence. Each walk will end in an immersive sound performance, set within and responding to the surrounding landscape. This walk will feature Jayden Goodrem, a descendent of the Peramangk people. Love local produce
The Canberra Harvest Festival is in its ninth year and is set to be bigger and tastier than ever. The Environment Centre will be cooking gourmet, organic food made entirely from local produce while local producers will showcase their harvest. There will be live music by the lake to keep you entertained and the Locals Bar is back, showcasing some of Canberra's very own delicious wines and brews. The kids are well catered for with a fruit and vegetable growing competition and a play area with painting, drawing, and planting to keep the little ones occupied. Free workshops include brewing kombucha, backyard aquaponics, keeping backyard chickens, natural beekeeping, composting techniques; and basic bike maintenance. March 25, from 2pm to 6pm.
