On the Precipice
ANCA Gallery's next exhibition, Precipice, by Canberra artist Annika Romeyn, will open on Wednesday, October 4 at 6pm and continues until October 22 at 5pm. It contains a series of large-scale prints that present minute details within the landscape in monumental scale. To complement the exhibition, on Saturday, October 21 at 2pm, musicians Holly Downes and Chris Stone from The String Contingent will perform a musical response to the exhibition. The current exhibition, Dreaming of Remembering, curated by Grace Blakeley-Carroll and featuring artists Tiffany Cole, Daniel Edwards, Lia Tajcnar and Naomi Zouwer, closes on Sunday at 5pm.

Amplified influences
ANU doctoral candidate Andrea McCuaig's exhibition Amplified addresses themes of dance and gestural painting. It evolved out of influences gained from a field trip last year to the US to research Abstract Expressionist works and her ongoing cross-disciplinary practice involving dance, choreography, video, experimental drawing and painting. The exhibition runs until October 15.
From little things...
Canberra's newest gallery calls itself the smallest walk-in gallery space to showcase emerging artists. The gallery of small things (GOST) was opened on September 27 at 27 Wade Street, Watson, by local ceramicist Anne Masters and will showcase ceramics, jewellery, mixed media, paintings, photography, print media and textiles. The opening show, 3 Cubed, is based around a conceptual idea around the number three.
Costa selected
ACT photographer Grace Costa, of Holt, has been selected to display three photographic prints, Gerry, Jazz and Jock, in the XI FIP World Polo Championship Art Exhibition in Sydney. She will join 90 other artists for the exhibition which includes 152 artworks including 72 two-dimensional works (paintings, drawings and photography), 35 small indoor sculptures and 45 large outdoor works. Curated by Selina Hitches, the exhibition, which will run from October 21 to 29, will award $14,000 in prizes, including first prize of $7000. More information and tickets: wpcsydney.com.
Conducting kudos
Canberra conductor Leonard Weiss has been selected for the 2018 Australian Conducting Academy Summer School, run by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the University of Tasmania, to be held in Hobart in January-February. Along with 10 other participants from across Australia, Weiss will work with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, pianists and course director Johannes Fritzsch, the orchestra's inaugural principal guest conductor. Participants receive the opportunity to conduct the TSO for a few days, culminating in a live performance on February 2.
Final curtains
Pigeonhole's critically praised production of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, the classic Australian play by Ray Lawler, has its final two performances on Saturday at the Q at 2pm and 8pm. Jordan Best plays the lead role of Olive, the barmaid who wants things to remain the same as they have been – the role her sister Blazey Best performed when the play was last seen in Canberra in 2012. Touch of the Irish
In partnership with the National Folk Festival and Nomadic Fish, Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres is presenting Irish singer-songwriter Declan O'Rourke on the Canberra leg of his national tour on Friday, October 3 at 7pm in the main hall of Ainslie Arts Centre.
