A few places are doing their bit and stepping up with more interesting singles events – we mentioned the Landcare for Singles speed-planting in late April.

Now Civic gaming bar Reload Bar and Games is getting involved, hosting a night of speed-dating through cooperative game play on June 4.

"We've had a big response already," said the bar's co-owner, Ravi Sharma.

"We filled up with guys almost immediately. We didn't know what to expect really because it's kind of a see-saw thing – speed-dating I understand is more popular with girls but video gaming is stereotypically more popular with men. So we were hoping those two factors would balance out."

While interested males can express their interest only for future events, women aged 22-32 can still register, with about half the places still free.

On the night, singles will rotate through 11 stations. There will be time to chat and get to know each other, followed by game play where couples have to work together to achieve a common goal.

"We've noticed games are a great ice breaker. You don't have to come up with any witty lines to impress someone, the awkward silences are comfortably filled by having to concentrate on a screen for a little while," said Ravi.
