When the event's former venue UniPub closed its doors, Comedy ACT went on the lookout for a new spot.

Comedy ACT's Dave Graham said a few venues were keen, but surprisingly, it was the underground Civic nightclub that ticked all the boxes.

Like UniPub, Academy will seat 200 people, although the wider space will give the audience a better view of the stage.

Academy's Simon Buchanan said the event is part of a plan to diversify what the venue is used for.

"It's been running as a nightclub for 13 years, so my plan is to try and utilise the space in as many ways as possible, push into new markets, bring a new crowd in and push the boundaries a little bit.

"It's a great space and I think there's just a lot of untapped potential here."

As well as a night of live comedy, the events will also be a chance for those who may consider themselves a touch beyond nights out at Academy to have a look at what became of the old Center Cinema.

And don't worry, there will be more than vodka Red Bulls available from the bar - Buchanan said there will even be a special wine list for the comedy nights.

The first Academy Comedy Club is on Saturday May 27, headlined by comedian and former triple J breakfast host Matt Okine, with support from Michael Connell, Tom Gibson and Harris Stuckey.

"We wanted to get the right act, the right person to kick it off. And Matt Okine is one of the few comedians in Australia that bridges that gap between the young people and the comedy fans," said Graham.

"[Okine] also plays DJ sets, so it's a great crossover and a perfect act for the launch," said Buchanan.

The comedy club will run from 7-9pm, before the seats are cleared way for Academy's regular Saturday night crowd from 10pm, and the plan is for the event to run monthly.
