Her choice would fall on the fair man, all her troubles would be left behind her, and she would be blessed with a family of three [children]. She could look forward to a substantial legacy and a long journey by water.

"All this might have sounded very creditable save for the small fact that the charming person for whom so pleasant a fate was predicted happened to be a man. Certainly it would have been difficult for an ordinary person to recognise in the sweet-faced girl with the golden hair, winning smile and stately, beautifully dressed figure a well-known military man. But a lady who claims to read the future should have been able to see through the masquerade.

"The heroine-hero of this incident, who enjoys a high position in this city, has been called on to serve his country in all our states. He is quite adept in "making up" in the feminine manner, and has appeared at many fancy dress functions in woman's attire."
