Towering at 2.3 metres high and 4.5 metres long, the mosaic of more than 165,000 Lego pieces captured The Lego Movie characters mid-action as they charged toward onlookers amid an array of explosive colours.

The mastermind behind the design was Australia's Ryan McNaught, one of only 13 certified Lego professionals in the world, and was constructed piece-by-piece by attendees of Brickvention at Melbourne in January.

Once again, Lego lovers from all around Australia will congregate to share their love of all things Lego at Canberra's very own Brick Expo at the end of August. From Star Wars to rocket ships and even a 4-ft-tall Hulk, there will be no shortage of new models with a record number of exhibitions this year.

David Boddy, Canberra Brick Expo chairman, was looking forward to a big turnout.

"We want to showcase great Lego creators from all over Australia, contribute more to the community through PatCH (Paediatrics at the Canberra Hospital), and give Canberra an awesome event," he said.

"Primarily it's to inspire imagination.

"Lego products are all about that quality build experience, there's no limit to what you can do with the product."

The sell-out event raised $70,000 last year for PatCH, and allowed the hospital to purchase a Cosycot for the Paediatric unit in the Emergency Department for newborn babies.

"It allows us to transport a newborn to the hospital in a very controlled environment, with proper handles, heating and life support, so that the baby is safe," said Tony Henshaw, deputy chairman at the Canberra Hospital Foundation.

Funds raised this year will be used to purchase a special ultrasound machine for small babies.
