It's not often girls are told it's okay to be loud but at Girls Rock! Canberra, a holiday camp with a focus on rock music, being loud is mandatory.

Running from July 10-14, with a showcase night on the 15th, the five-day camp is an opportunity to learn an instrument, form a band, write a few songs, participate in creative workshops making zines and printing band t-shirt, and basically make a lot of noise.
After the success of the inaugural camp last year, camp director Chiara Grassia is confident the 2017 winter session will again unearth some great talent.
"Last year's showcase was just wonderful," she says. "To see the girls up on stage, confident after just a week of working together, it was just great."
Grassia says the camp provides a safe, supportive environment for girls, trans and non-binary youth, aged 10-17, to explore their creativity and self-expression.
"Learning something new, learning new skills can be quite daunting but at camp we're not worried about competing with each other, or whether people make mistakes, it's all about supporting each other and giving the girls agency to find their voice."
There has been much written lately about the lack of women in the rock world and Grassia agrees that women are typically not exposed to that particular type of music.
"To see the girls come in, some of them have no musical experience, and that's fine by us, but to see them play the drums, or pick up an electric guitar, to see them use a microphone for the first time, and to see them make some noise is really empowering, both for us, as mentors, and the girls."
While the line-up is still being finalised there'll be lunch-time performances from Cable Ties, a Melbourne three-piece punk band whose debut album was a recent Triple J album of the week, and Carb on Carb, a pop punk duo from New Zealand.
The camp is $450 for the week which covers all mentoring, workshops and performances, as well as morning and afternoon tea. Financial aid is available and this year there is a full-scholarship for a camper from a CaLD (culturally and linguistically diverse) or Indigenous background.
Applications close on June 11. For more details about the camp head to girlsrockcanberra.com
