Hoyts cinemas are rolling out upgrades at both their Belconnen and Woden sites to install comfy, reclining seats in every single row of every cinema.

"This is the new normal - every seat is going to be like this and prices haven't gone up," said Simon Ruhfus, manager at Hoyts Woden.

The new seats are leather with more padding, plus electric reclining backs and foot rests. They're also significantly wider than previously.

"It's just more or less about giving back to the people coming and supporting the industry, so you can just sit back put your feet up and relax. It's a relaxing, nice experience and you get to watch it on the big screen," said Mark Penfold, manager at Belconnen Hoyts.

To make room for the bigger seats, the capacity of each cinema had to be cut by 50 per cent.

"It's gonna be more of a fight [for tickets], so getting tickets earlier will be something we'll need to drive home to people, because they'll need to do that to secure the seats they want," said Penfold.

Belconnen is the first site to get the new seats, with five upgraded cinemas open to the public from this weekend.

Woden is in the process of the upgrades, with both cinemas aiming to have all cinemas fitted with the new seats in time for the release of the new James Bond film Spectre on November 12.

In a further move to compete with other cinema chains Dendy and Palace, both Hoyts sites will be introducing liquor licences in December.

"We will be licensed from front door to back door so you can bring beverages into all the cinemas," said Penfold.

Belconnen and Woden are two of only six Hoyts cinemas across the country to get the new upgrade as part of an initial trial. If successful, they will be rolled out across all sites.
