The museum was established on the back of Jurassic Park's global appeal in 1993 and more than two decades later it is enjoying a surge in popularity due to the release of the latest blockbuster.

National Dinosaur Museum manager Ben Wardle said visitor numbers had jumped since the release of the movie and he expected numbers to grow.

"The night after the release of the film we had an adults-only Jurassic Park tour event," he said. "We had heaps of interest from people in their 20s and 30s, people who were probably kids when the first film came out.

He said there was about a 20 per cent increase over the June long weekend compared to last year's figures.

Mr Wardle said the museum had worked with Hoyts to capitalise on renewed interest in the prehistoric monsters.

"We are giving away a one-metre long Pteranodon, which is a big flying reptile," he said.

"We've been talking to Hoyts and they said they hadn't seen this sort of interest in a film for years. "Some of our staff have been to see it three or four times already.

"It has probably gone beyond people's expectations.

"We are really expecting the spike during and even post the film."

Education manager Phil Hore said dinosaur popularity often hinged on the popularity of the films.

"It is interesting how kids feed off the movies," he said.

"We actually have to guard our tour guides against the questions they're going to get asked because the movie will influence all the questions the kids start asking."

He said staff were already starting to field questions about the Indominus rex, a genetically created hybrid dinosaur which stars in the latest instalment.

Mr Hore said the big question surrounding Jurassic Park III was which dinosaur would win in a fight between the Spinosaurus and the Tyrannosaurus.

Despite the Spinosaurus winning in the film, Mr Hore said in reality Tyrannosaurus would have won the fight hands down.
