POETRY IN THE HOUSE
Poetry at the Gods has a new name and home in 2016. Poetry in the House is located in University House, 1 Bailmain Crescent, Acton, in the Australian National University. The first reading will be in the Common Room on February 9 at 8pm and the first reader will be renowned Australian poet Les Murray. Bookings advisable. Admission (collected on the night just before the reading): $10 waged, $5 unwaged. Meals are available in the Fellows Bar and Cafe at the ANU's University House from 6.30pm. Bookings for meals can be made directly on 6125 5289 or indirectly by joining Geoff's table/s (gpage40@bigpond.net.au). "Reading-only" seats can also be booked (via Geoff Pryor only).

CALIBRE PRIZE
Australian Book Review seeks entries in the 10th Calibre Prize for an outstanding non-fiction essay. All essayists writing in English are eligible, regardless of where they live. Essays must be between 3000 and 7000 words and must be written in English. Deadline: January 18, 2016. First prize: $5000 and publication in ABR. January 23: Brother and sister Benjamin and Michelle Law, both writers, will talk about the experience of growing up Chinese in Australia; 2pm in the National Library of Australia Theatre. Tickets $15, include refreshments and book signing. Bookings: nla.gov.au.
January 24: From the gold rush decades of the 1860s and 1870s, small numbers of Chinese women started arriving in Australia. Kate Bagnall shares stories of some of the women who left China for Australia in the late Qing dynasty, as well as the families and communities they formed here, at 2pm in the National Library of Australia Conference Room. February 2: In the National Gallery of Australia shop at 10.30am, Claudia Hyles will discuss The Merchants of Light by Marta Maretich. Cost $15 members, $18 guests. Bookings: nga.gov.au.
February 18: Eat, drink and be literary with award-winning Australian author Anna Funder at The Hall, University House, ANU . Anna will be signing copies of All That I Am, Stasiland and The Girl with the Dogs from 6.15pm. Tickets are $70 and include a main course, dessert, a glass of wine and tea or coffee. February 21: At 2pm in the Conference Room, Level 4, National Library of Australia, join anthropologist Jinghong Zhang as she presents a vivid account of the transformation of a cottage handicraft into a major industry in a talk about Pu-erh tea. February 25: Hear poet, author, translator, academic and critic Ouyang Yu discuss the challenges of operating in two languages. Yu, who was brought up in China, is a prolific writer in English and Chinese, publishing 77 books and founding Australia's only Chinese literary journal, Otherland.
