ACT Policing want to identify the alleged offender and the two men seen with him in CCTV footage of the incident.

The video, recorded about 10.40pm, shows one of the three men bump into and later hug the victim. The alleged attacker is seen shaking hands with the victim before punching him in the face, causing him to fall backwards.

The three men left the nightclub straight afterwards, while the victim went to hospital with facial injuries, Acting Superintendent Jason Kennedy said.

"He underwent surgery and was released from hospital shortly after," he said.

"Whether [it causes] a minor or serious injury - police do not tolerate this behaviour."

He understood the victim did not know the men or the motive behind the attack.

Superintendent Kennedy said Mr Wolf was assisting police in their investigations and had expressed concern for the victim.

"We do have our regional targeting teams proactively patrolling and we also work very closely with pub and club owners to make it safe for Canberrans," he said.

"Unfortunately these incidents do occur.

"It's about responsible consumption of alcohol and responsible service of alcohol. It's about all of us taking our own part in making it a safe night out."
