Thanks to an ACT Heritage grant and plenty of volunteer help, new interpretive signs and track markers have been unveiled to point out 670 recorded plant species in the area.

Friends of Black Mountain member Linda Beveridge said that along with the grant of more than $10,000, considerable effort had been put into the new signage and track markers decorated with indigenous art.

"Very often one walks along and thinks 'Gee that looks interesting, but wonder what it is'," she said.

"Having these interpretive signs gives people the opportunity to read about the plants, identify which one it is catching their eye."

She said QR codes on the signs allowed visitors to tap into more information in online brochures or refer back to plant species and how it was used by local cultures via the Ngunnawal Plant Use Book.

More than half of all orchid species in the ACT are on Black Mountain, together with 47 types of grasses and 50 kinds of daisies.

It's hoped the signs will ignite interest in the loop walk, which begins and ends at the Caswell Drive reserve.

Environment and Heritage Minister Mick Gentleman said the goal was to "raise awareness of the reserve's native flora from the perspective of local community experts and Ngunnawal traditional custodians".

Mr Gentleman encouraged Canberans to take advantage of the local trails to get 30 minutes of daily exercise.

"Mixing walking with nature is a proven combination to improve your health," he said.

"This project helps people to appreciate nature, study biodiversity and enjoy a walk with family and friends all within a few minutes of the city centre."
