In Melbourne for the start of his first national tour of Australia, the coiffed star of The Mighty Boosh and Never Mind The Buzzcocks made his name as a purveyor of the absurd and a modern surrealist, but he's still reeling from the reaction his recent "punk" television series, Luxury Comedy, received.

"Someone called it the second 9-11 – which is amazing. At first I was really upset and then I thought, 'can I put that on the DVD cover?'," Fielding says.

More annoying though, were the comments on Twitter where people dismissed his Dada-like comedy as a result of being on drugs, or simply being mad.

"If something's made for kids, then it's OK, but if it's for adults then people go 'are you on drugs? What's happening, where's the logic?' It's so disappointing."

Fielding, 41, reckons its a generational thing.

"I was a kid in the 1970s, so there was a hangover from the '60s which was pretty psychedelic. I think maybe if you're from the '80s or '90s or even the noughties, you don't have that. Young people now are quite square. It's not their fault but everything's quite boring."

A long-time fan of eyeliner and fashion, Fielding finds today's pop stars boring.

"In the '70s, you had David Bowie and Marc Bolan, and a lot going on. Whereas One Direction – they've sold more records than the Beatles yet they dress like they're just coming out of their houses," he says.

"I'm not dissing them, not saying it's good or bad, but there's no make-believe to it. I like a bit of fantasy, a bit of dressing up and escapism."

Which is what he'll be delivering in An Evening With Noel Fielding. The show is technically a solo show, but his brother Mike Fielding (The Mighty Boosh's Naboo) and long-time collaborator Tom Meeten are integral parts of the two-hour gig.

"I get bored of the sound of my own voice after about half an hour," he says. "I love stand-up but sometimes I go and see it and think 'come on, so lazy!' So we've got a big show with music, sketches, stand-up, live animation, audience participation and costumes. I like to give people value for money."

This is Fielding's biggest tour of Australia and he's looking forward to playing cities he's never visited before.

"Everyone always knocks Canberra, don't they? But I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait," he says. "And you've got Prince Harry and all now."
