Patrick Reid, aka Matthew Le Nevez stars in this season of Aussie drama Love Child, with the finale airing on WIN next Tuesday, June 23.

The former Kambah boy's just started filming new Foxtel drama The Kettering Incident in Tasmania. He's playing a police detective linked to an investigation into two girls who mysteriously disappeared in identical circumstances 15 years apart. The show will air later this year.

Meanwhile Matthew's former Offspring co-star, and fellow Canberra alumni, Patrick Brammall is returning to the silver screen in new ABC drama Glitch.

Kicking off on July 9, the six-part series tells the story of six people who have returned from the dead in perfect health.

The actor whose Offspring character Leo (spoiler alert) ended up with Nina Proudman, is also playing the starring role in soon-to-be-released flick Ruben Guthrie.

In the film, which premiered on the opening night of the Sydney Film Festival, Brammall plays an advertising hotshot who swears off alcohol. It's in cinemas July 16.

There's probably few people in Canberra better qualified to launch a film festival than critic, director and writer Simon Weaving who officially kickstarted the Tuggeranong 55 Club's Modern Movie Season this week.

Weaving chose the classic 1967 film The Graduate to open the festival, the film showing at 2pm on Saturday, June 20 at the club at 101 Cowlishaw Street in Greenway.

An episode of the 1940s film The Phantom will also be shown. And all moviegoers receive a free ice-cream.

"It's all very old school and I take my hat off to them," Weaving said.

The festival will feature films rarely seen on the big screen since their original release – The Ghost Rider (July 18), Dave (August 15), The Wind and the Lion (September 19), Mao's Dancer (October 17) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (November 21). All screenings are at the Tuggeranong 55 Club and all start at 2pm.

And leave it to Weaving and his encyclopaedic film knowledge to come up with a fun fact about The Graduate – that studio bosses wanted Doris Day as Mrs Robinson and Robert Redford as Benjamin, which would have made for a much more white bread version of the film that became a classic, in no short part due to director Mike Nichols pushing for eventual stars Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft.

The Canberra City Band is turning 90.

The Canberra City Band is turning the ripe old age of 90, and they're celebrating with a gig fitting of the milestone.

"We've been holding a sort of an annual concert for the number of years but because this is the 90th we've decided to do something a little bit bigger," said the band's president Dom Galloway.

Their "Anniversary Spectacular" is on June 27 at Albert Hall, with both day and night events.

"The first session will be our two concert bands, and that's on at 2 o'clock. Then at 7.30 that evening we have our big band doing a dance concert, and we've got the Swing Cats Dance Group to do some dancing, maybe give a bit of a lesson and set the tone and get people up on the floor and dancing."

While no members have quite seen all nine decades, baritone saxophone player Bob Wood has impressively been in the band for just over six of them.

"He's a bit of a legend. He joined the band in 1952 so he's been with the organisation for a long time. He's still technically playing in both the Concert Band and the Spectrum Big Band and he's a phenomenal player," said Dom.

And age certainly isn't slowing the band down. They've just launched the Canberra Wind Symphony, "taking the best of the best of our musicians and some of the professional and semi-professional musicians from around town and putting them together".

And there are also plans for another band to support younger musicians straight out of high school.

You can hear the Canberra Wind Symphony in their first public performance on July 5 at the High Court. "It's a great venue and the sound in there is brilliant. We're expecting that to be a pretty packed out concert," said Dom.

This year's event was held at ADFA, raising funds to support homelessness services in the Canberra and Goulburn region.
