On Wednesday, she'll walk around Lake Burley Griffin with her family and friends to raise awareness of organ donation.

In February 2014, Ms Cargill had a long-awaited double lung and heart transplant to cure a congenital heart condition.

"The recovery was tough," she said. "It's a good 12 months to recover, it's a really tough thing to go through.

"But ... I could never have imagined, I never knew it was so good to feel this healthy."

Ms Cargill will be taking part in the Gift of Life walk around the lake, something that would have been completely impossible just two years ago, to raise awareness of organ donation.

"I recognise for some people it might be a difficult conversation to have but ... it could be your family member, or it could be your loved one," she said.

"It's ordinary people giving extraordinary gifts and I think that's a beautiful thing."

More than 40,000 Canberrans have registered to be organ donors and 35 people received organs from 11 donors in the past year, more than in the 2013.

An ACT Health spokesman said progress had been made to improve organ donation registration, exceeding set targets and raising awareness of the issue.

"Organ donation is rare," he said.

"Fewer than 1 per cent of people die in the specific circumstances in hospital where donation is possible," he said. "Tissue donation can occur much more frequently.

Health minister Simon Corbell said he would be signing up to be an organ donor before attending the walk next week.

"I think for that little bit of time filling out a form, how much more time we could potentially give another person, if those circumstances occur," he said.

Mr Corbell said he would be undertaking the walk as a way to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.

"I think stories like Kerri's really highlight how life-changing organ donation is," he said. "Obviously the death of someone is a terrible tragedy but there can be some meaning from it.

"It is literally a gift of life and I think we need to continue to raise awareness."
