On the mornings she has horse riding classes, her face lights up with a "big beaming smile".

But for Grace, horse riding is much more than just a hobby, it's has also given her a new lease on life.

The seven-year-old from Kaleen suffers from a rare disorder called Rett Syndrome which impacts her physiological and mental development.

Her condition can develop in to scoliosis, something her father Matt hopes can be avoided with horse therapy.

Grace is now in her second year of therapy at Pegasus Riding for the Disabled ACT.

Mr Tillott said horse facilitated therapy had been "fantastic" in developing Grace's muscles and building her core strength.

"Pegasus has been one of the best things for her from a health point of view. Horse riding will help stop or at least delay her ending up in a wheelchair," he said.

"What they (Pegasus) do is pivotal for all those kids"

The school will host an open day on May 14 and Pegasus' executive officer Jane Thompson hoped it would spur the community to get involved.

"We're opening our gates to let people know who we are and what we are all about," she said.

Pegasus offers horse facilitated therapy programs for people of all ages with a disability. The mounted and unmounted programs can improve balance, coordination, and encourage communication.

The skills developed through horse riding can be utilised in students' daily lives and Ms Thompson, who has more than 47 years of dealing with intense disability, said traditional therapies could only take children so far.

"Pegasus offers something different. It's life changing. It builds self-esteem and self-confidence," she said.

The organisation faced financial hurdles and potential closure in 2013, something Ms Thompson admitted was tough going but said they now had "some breathing space" despite not having received "any favours" from the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

"We subsidise the cost of the programs heavily and it's thanks to the support of donors and sponsors," she said.

"If we had to pay for the personnel it takes to run our programs we'd never survive. Our volunteers are critical and we're always looking for more."

Pegasus already enlists the help of nearly 300 generous volunteers for daily operations and will receive help from around 100 volunteers on Saturday, including support from local school children and firefighters.

Local businesses have already donated $6,000 to fund the open day which will include a live band, a miniature horse display, a horse obstacle course and a Lipizzaner free reign display.

The open day will celebrate the ongoing support and contribution of the many volunteers, sponsors, donors and riders.

However, Ms Thompson said one of the key goals of the open day was to increase support from volunteers and encourage donations from the wider community.

"The open day is to raise understanding of who we are and what we do and hopefully people feel motivated to carry on that support for us," she said.

The open day will be held on May 14 at Pegasus Farm in Holt.
