For those brave enough to face the cold, the city has provided photographers with a great opportunity to capture the season's extremes in this year's Canberra Times winter photo competition.

With temperatures having yet to exceed the mid-teens and several days dropping to below zero, June has been particularly cold in the capital, with rain and grey skies expected during the coming week, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

However, as Gavin Rose's image of the early morning skies and fog creeping across Cooleman Ridge shows, there is real beauty to this weather.

Mr Rose, who works in the Navy, says that a walk up the ridge is part of his Saturday and Sunday routine.

"I just came up over the ridge, and that was the vista in front of us," he said, taking a quick photo with his iPhone as he and his wife watched the fog creep across the land.

Dylan Valentine's image of the sun rising above the clouds at the National Arboretum displays a bird bathed in the golden glow of its rays.

Titled the "early bird gets the worm", the picture captures the contradictory nature of Canberra's winter, where grey clouds and chilly weather can give way to the warmth of the sun.

The Canberra Times photo competition is open until August 31. Photographers are invited to send their best winter photos in for the chance to win $1000 of prizes, as well as have their work published.
