Born in Canberra and raised in Sydney, Dylan and his older brother had been visiting circus training facilities during their school holidays. When the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, the only Australian full-time youth circus, came to town for auditions, the brothers decided to try out.

Both boys were successful, and with Dylan only 11 at the time, joining up meant the whole family moving to the circus' home in Albury-Wodonga.

"Our parents asked us if this is really what we wanted to do and we were pretty certain so all of us moved down here," he said.

"[Before then] performing hadn't really entered my mind. I never had any idea what I wanted to do but this seemed to be a really good line of work – just the culture is fantastic and everyone here is so great with each other."

The Flying Fruit Flies are currently on the road, performing their show Circus Under My Bed to a sold-out 18 shows at the Sydney Opera House, and the next stop is Canberra.

"In one word [the show is] just fun. It's about this little girl who's moving house and she's having trouble packing. She doesn't want to move so she calls the help of her imaginary friends to help her packing. It's excellent for the kids," he said.

But according to Richard Hull, the circus' executive director, they don't discriminate when it comes to the bigger kids.

"We recommend it for ages four and up but we've found when we played it in Sydney, a lot of adults came without kids," he said.

"It's got magic and innocence and it's just always very inspiring to see young people at such high skill and performance level so I'd encourage everyone to come along. So having kids isn't compulsory. Children will be provided."

In more circus news, if you know someone who has a bit of a flair for acrobatics, take note.

The National Institute of Circus Arts is about to hold pre-audition workshops around the country, and is coming to Canberra for the first time on Saturday July 18.

NICA acrobatics coach Mat Daniels said the pre-audition gives potential circus superstars the chance to practice for audition, and find out their weaknesses so they can train ahead of the actual auditions at the end of the year.

"It's a physical audition – there's four elements: flexibility, handstands, tumbling, strength and conditioning, and then there's a performance element as well," he said.

Mat himself is an Flying Fruit Circus alumnus, and has performed on Broadway, co-choreographed for the 2006 closing ceremonies at both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, and alongside his role at NICA, also works as a talent scout for Cirque du Soleil.

He said they're looking for males and females aged 16-25.

"I think [potential students] would need to have knowledge of either gymnastics, dance, martial arts – someone that's had some kind of formal training before."

NICA in Melbourne has the only university degree in circus arts in the country – yes you can study circus at uni – and its graduates have gone on to work all over the world.

Last weekend, Hustle & Scout Twilight Markets travelled south to Hobart, for its first-ever market outside of its home town.

It coincided with Hobart's annual winter festival Dark Mofo, and Hustle & Scout founder Tegan McAuley said the market was well received.

"I've had feedback from visitors keen to see the event pop up again next year," she said.

"The event was a more intimate, boutique version of Hustle & Scout Canberra, with 33 designers versus the usual 60 in Canberra. It was lovely to run a smaller version of the event in Hobart, to meet new designers from new parts of Australia, and to be immersed in the city…"

Two Canberra labels – Steve Wright and Louisa de Smet from Corr Blimey, and Jade Sargent from Sovata – went down with Tegan, while the other stallholders hailed from Cowra, Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania.

Tegan's now busy planning the next Canberra market for September, when it will move to its new home. No word on where that will be yet, but we'll keep you posted.

It's that time of year again – the school holidays are coming – and activities for kids don't come much more entertaining than this. Westfield Belconnen and Woden are holding 3D printing courses where kids can learn how 3D printing works, and get to print something themselves – all for free.

The sessions are run by Canberra-based Australian 3D Manufacturing Association (A3DMA). The group has been working with the ACT government on a 3D printing pilot program which has run in six schools across the ACT, and will now be further rolled out across the territory and the country.

These days, everything from cars to apartment buildings, makeup and even human body parts is being 3D printed around the world, and it's safe to say it's going to play a fairly big role in the future.

For kids who haven't had access to the printers at school yet, these one-hour courses are their chance to get up close and personal. Aimed at grade 4-10 kids, they'll get to print their own phone case, piece of jewellery or toy.
