Featuring the "iconic" suspension bridge and a blue flowing font inspired by the Queanbeyan River, the new filter is now available on popular messaging app Snapchat and ready to be used by residents and visitors to the city.
Snapchat launched globally in 2011 and to date more than four million Australians have signed up for an account. The app allows users to take and send time-limited photos and videos to friends and family. A 'filter' is a border, decoration or augmented reality effect you can place over your photo to anchor yourself to a specific location, give yourself cute animal features or change the sound of your voice.
The new Queanbeyan filter was the concept of proud 2620 resident Brent Hunter, who was disappointed that Canberra, Young and Cowra had their own filters and Queanbeyan didn't.
"I went on a road trip to all these obscure NSW towns and they all had filters so I decided we needed one too," Hunter said.
He joined forces with Lib Ferreira from Lib Creative to design the filter and sent it to Snapchat for approval. A few days later it was live.
But if you're trying to use it in Fyshwick or even Oaks Estate you're out of luck - the filter is geolocated to Queanbeyan and therefore inaccessible past the ACT/NSW border.
Hunter said he would love to build a library of Queanbeyan Snapchat filters and said a new one featuring Hotel Queanbeyan (Top Pub) could be next on the list.
