The event, which began in 2007, has been steadily growing in popularity each year, thanks to the never-fading love of the vinyl record.

Enthusiasts line up every year to get their hands on exclusive, limited edition vinyls released to celebrate the day.

Landspeed Records owner Blake Budak said silverchair's release of their first EP would be one of the most sought-after this year.

The day celebrates collecting music as a tangible object and supports independent record stores which have survived despite the growing popularity of music downloads.

Mr Budak said although the vinyl market was a small percentage overall, collectors were a very passionate bunch.

"Running a music store has been doom and gloom for the last 10 years, the last couple of years there has been a reinvigoration and it's good to see a lot of new enthusiastic people coming in, which keeps up the desire to keep on going" Mr Budak said.

The day encourages the communal feel of flicking through racks to purchase music in store, over the less sociable option of adding albums to the shopping cart from behind a computer screen.

Mr Budak believed his customers enjoyed the collectable qualities of the vinyl and he said the day held something diverse for everyone and there would be more than 200 second-hand vinyls up for grabs.

"The unique and nice sound is part of it but it's also just the physical aspect people aren't entirely ready to let go of," he said.

"It is big, the artwork is nice, it's impressive to have displayed in your house and that's the reason why vinyl is remaining popular."

The day will be celebrated across Canberra on Saturday at Miranda Hi-Fi, Wildwood, Songland records, Landspeed Records and Lilitu's Books & Music.

Mr Budak said he was blown away by last year's turn-out, which fell on the the Easter long weekend, but he expected this year would be even better.
