Amber Nichols and Hayley Jensen, who are performing at a special gig in Canberra next month, have shared a similar journey from the national capital to national exposure.

New mum Amber, 32, recently finished fifth on the latest series of The Voice while Hayley was a contestant on The Voice last year and also finished fourth in the second series of Australian Idol, in 2004.

They originally met singing at church in Canberra when they were teenagers and have supported their singing dreams ever since.

"I'd never had a friend who was a singer before so it was just the greatest thing ever and we spent every moment together singing. We still do," Amber said, with a laugh.

"I think we sing more to each other than we actually speak."

The pair got together for a special shoot for The Canberra Times recently at the Kingston Foreshore, with Hayley travelling down from Sydney where she has continued to pursue her music.

"We've been best friends ever since we met. Hayley was my bridesmaid. And even though she's moved to Sydney we've remained close. She supported me all the way through my Voice journey. She was there at every show and cheering me on and getting the crowd going," Amber said.

"She gave me tips on how not to be overwhelmed and how to appreciate all the moments."

Hayley said she was so glad Australia got to see her talented friend.

"It was so lovely to see her absolutely excel on The Voice and watch her journey. She really deserves to get the accolades and for people to hear her beautiful voice because she's always been amazing," Hayley, 32, said.

They will be performing on the same bill at The Abbey on November 28, the first time the pair have been on stage together for a few years.

"After Hayley came off Idol I did back-up singing for a lot of her shows so we've performed together quite a lot but we haven't performed together for ages, so this is going to be really special. I think we'll probably do a song together on the night as well," Amber said.

"She's just a really positive human being. Very generous. She just has a very beautiful energy about her. You can't be around Hayley without having a smile on your face. She's just a very uplifting, encouraging person. But she's also a very inspiring person. She's very driven and everything she does, she just puts 110 per cent in. We're walking sort of the same journey, we're both trying to get out music and voices out there and she just never gives up.''

Hayley said Amber was just "so cool".

"She's the most beautiful person inside and out," she said. "And she's just been my best friend over the years through everything. She's one of my only friends I can be completely honest with and tell her absolutely anything and I know she'll never judge me or think differently of me. She's just a really authentic, beautiful person."

After finishing with her band Silver Cities, Hayley has been in the studio recording a solo EP, hoping to get her first single out before Christmas.

"It's probably a little bit more country than my first album I released," she said.

"There's songs I've written over the last year or so since I've been on The Voice and I think it's the first time I've been 100 per cent honest and vulnerable in my songwriting."

She's also been doing some Burt Bacharach tribute shows with Idol alumnus Casey Donovan and Doug Williams from The Voice and Sydney vocal coach Darren Mapes.

"It's good fun singing those classic songs. It's the best feeling in the audience," she said.

Hayley laughs when she remembers she and Amber both auditioned for Idol in 2004, camping out at Bruce Stadium, with "frost on their nose". Neither got through but Hayley was successful when she auditioned again in Sydney.

"Ten years on, we've found our own sound," she said.

"I guess reality TV has given us this platform to do what we love together. I'm sure we'll do some songwriting together in the future."

Amber, meanwhile, gave birth to her second child, Olive, last month but hasn't let that slow down her efforts to keep singing.

"I'm just trying to grab the opportunity with both hands and stay in the forefront of the public's minds. I'm getting a lot of requests for gigs which is really good and choosing which are the best for me and the community and juggling it with a newborn. But I have a great husband who is very supportive and been helping me a lot."

And she intends to stay in Canberra.

"More and more a lot of the artists are choosing to stay here and I feel like there's something kind of bubbling at the moment," she said.

"There's a lot of great events. Really great cafes and restaurants popping up. There's a lot more venues open to music and just art in general, I feel there's more of a home for it in Canberra with New Acton and Braddon and Kingston Foreshore. There's just really great things happening and I can't wait to see where we are in five years. I don't want to leave this town to do what I want to do, I want to do it here."
