Fyshwick brewery Zierholz has been busy brewing kegs of their German-style beer to be ready for the first ever Oktoberfest Parklands this weekend.

The new over 18s volkfest is happening right next to Lake Burley Griffin at the Patrick White Lawns in front of the National Library on Saturday.

Brewer Christoph Zierholz was invited to be the main beer supplier. Also popular for their German fare, Zierholz will be roasting a few whole pigs on spits and selling pork rolls, apple strudels and pretzels on the day.

Zierholz will be pouring both their original German ale and mid-strength lager, and no dramas if the kegs run out.

"So far we have delivered 100 kegs of beer at 60 litres per keg. And we're hoping that we'll have to rush back to the brewery to get more - we brewed some additional stock in case we get through all of that," said Mr Zierholz.

The traditional tapping of the keg, which launches Munich's Oktoberfest each year, will be performed by Maria Friedrich-Boerger from the German Embassy at 3pm.

While in Germany it marks the beginning of festivities, Oktoberfest Parklands organisers are holding it later so that more people can watch on, but the beer will be flowing from when the gates open at midday.

Oktoberfest Parklands is the creation of Canberra's Kick's Entertainment, who also run Spilt Milk music festival and The Commons Street Feast that ran in Commonwealth Park in December last year.

The event will also include a beer tent with an oompah-style band, rides, a silent disco, DJs, and a best dressed competition, plus a "strongarm" competition where ladies and gents can prove their strength by holding filled steins of beer for as long as they can.

Jeff Drake from Kick's Entertainment told Fairfax Media in August that Oktoberfest Parklands was a cross between the traditional German event and Australian touches.

"We want to take those traditions of the huge beer hall, the long wooden tables that everyone sits at together, and build it around the food and beer culture," he said.

"We're combining that with what you can get out of Australia which is beautiful weather, beautiful grasslands, beautiful lake, and some Australian food and drinks. So for us it's the meeting of the traditional with embracing the Australian side of things as well."

Oktoberfest Parklands is on Saturday October 14 at the Patrick White Lawns and is over 18s only. Limited tickets available at the gate.
