From the Goulburn Evening Penny Post 100 years ago, a report to complement Gang Gang's main story today on bush dancing. During the war years bush dances were an important fundraiser, as well as social events. The is particular report relates to a dance at Gundaroo's hall on a Friday night in aid of the Belgian Fund. [The fund was established for refugees, following Germany's invasion of Belgium].

"The greatest possible praise is due to the committee, and especially to the joint secretaries, Miss Ruby Booth and Miss Mary Morgan, who put in a great amount of work in organising and carrying through the function to a successful issue.
"Gunning, as usual, was particularly well represented at the dance; in fact the remark was passed that it was easier to get Gunning folk to attend a dance at Gundaroo than in their own township. We of 'The Centre' regard this as a decided compliment. On Friday night Bungendore, Ginninderra, and Collector were also well represented.
"The hall was crowded with dancers, and looked at its best, having been tastefully decorated with flags, among which the Belgian colours showed prominently. The catering was in the hands of a Gunning firm, and left nothing to be desired. Mr W. Jewell, of your city, [Goulburn] supplied the music, and as usual pleased the dancers immensely. Several fancy costumes were in evidence, and quite a number of handsome evening dresses were noticed. Mr G. A. McInnes, assisted by Mr A. A. Masters, successfully discharged the onerous duties of master of ceremonies.
"Quite a feature of the evening was the fancy sets. About 9 o'clock the grand march, headed by the Allies, took place. There were four fancy sets, and considerable trouble and expense must have been necessary to make them so attractive. A first and second prize had been given, and the result was determined by ballot.
"On Saturday night a juvenile dance was held for the same object, and was also well attended. The children had also fancy sets, which looked particularly nice. The sets arranged by Miss Nelly Bush (fairies) and Miss Eily Booth (Iceland) deserve special mention. The most pleasing part of the whole affair is the fact that the total proceeds exceed £40, and as the expenses will not be heavy a very substantial sum will be forthcoming for the object in view."
