Waterhouse days

Stuffed chicks and bull skulls and beetles, oh my! After a two-year absence, the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize is back for its seasonal tour at the National Archives, and the selection this year is mighty fine, with four Canberra artists among the top entrants. Dan Power won the Emerging Category his piece G[RAZED], a work of pen and ink on a (cleaned-out and bleached) bull skulls, while glass artists Emilie Patteson, Jenne Kemarre Martiniello and Elizabeth Kelly have wow-worthy glass pieces on show. All works – especially this year's winner by Julia deVille, four tiny chicks nestled in an antique silver soup ladle – have used the exhibition as a platform for environmental debate. And with a topic that's becoming increasingly complex and difficult to navigate via today's media, a meditative stroll through the Waterhouse show at the archives is sure to be both life-affirming and thought-provoking. The exhibition is showing at the National Archives of Australia, Queen Victoria Terrace, Parkes, until November 13.
