Material Poetics at ANCA

Hmmm, let's get serious now. The poeticness of poetry? The thingyness of things? Who knows where stand in this arty world that is Canberra? This enticing new exhibition, opening this week at ANCA, should set us straight: "Material Poetics explores how poetry can inhabit the heart of visual art practice, and how visual and material energies can animate poetic practice. Seven artists (three of whom are poets) present what the concept of 'material poetics' means to them, resulting in a cross-disciplinary investigation of the 'thingness of things' (Heidegger) and the performativity of language." Material Poetics, by Caren Florance, UK Frederick, Katie Hayne, Nicci Haynes, Sarah Rice, Jen Webb, Jordan Williams, opens August 24 at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place, Dickson, and runs until September 11. On Tuesday, September 6, there will be a poetry reading at the gallery with Canberra Times poetry editor Melinda Smith, Sarah Rice, Jen Webb and Jordan Williams, as part of the Poetry on the Move Festival.
