Land and sea in Bungendore
There's a whole lot of drama and tension happening over at Suki & Hugh Gallery in Bungendore this weekend, with the opening of a new exhibition of oil land and seacapes by Susie Dureau: "The body of work is a continuation of a theme for Dureau who is intensely deep and poetic in her approach to her paintings," says the gallery. "They are reflections of the human condition and although there are no humans represented there is certainly a strong sense of soul and feeling. These very human elements are articulated acutely." Wild Histories, by Susie Dureau, opens August 6 at Suki & Hugh Gallery, 38A Gibraltar Street, Bungendore, until September 26.

From Lapland to Canberra
Think it's cold out there? Try being a reindeer herder in Lapland! Or at least go and learn all about it at an intriguing new photographic exhibition opening this weekend at the National Arboretum Canberra. The works are by Parisa Applegarth, described in the guff as a "modern nomad", and a show a species and landscape under threat: "Applegarth's photographs share rare insights into the lives of Sami reindeer herders in Lapland in the Arctic Circle. Today there are just a handful of Sami people left who still follow the old ways. Parisa's images follow the life of a Sami man living and working with the reindeer, strongly connected to the harsh environment around him, with little contact to the rest of the world." Winter Wonderland opens August 6 at the National Arboretum Canberra in the Village Centre and runs until September 4. Paria Applegarth will be giving a free talk about the show on August 6 at 11am at the Village Centre.
Taste of Figaro at Parly
Ahead of Opera Australia's tour of The Marriage of Figaro, director Michael Gow, conductor Paul Fitzsimon and lead singers Celeste Lazarenko, Jeremy Kleeman, Lucas de Jong and Olivia Cranwell will discuss and sing some arias from the show, described as "the Downton Abbey of opera but heaps more fun". The event is next Sunday August 14, 2.00-4.00pm in the Great Hall at Parliament House. Entry is free but bookings recommended, through Canberra Ticketing, or 6275 2700. The Marriage of Figaro is showing at Canberra Theatre Centre from August 25 to 27, 2016.
Winter drawings at Beaver
For more winterness, Hobart artist Lucienne Rickard is showing works at Beaver Galleries: "[Her] work is marked by a sharp eye for detail, zealous imagination and a fastidious, almost obsessive, mode of execution," says the gallery. "Using controlled and repetitive pencil strokes, Lucienne presents the viewer with richly detailed, textured and challenging works that unite themes of beauty, death, brutality and obsession." Winter Drawings, by Lucienne Rickard, is showing at Beaver Galleries, 81 Denison Street, Deakin, until August 21.
Shapes of doubt at CCAS
Hannah Beasley has a mind-bending new show at CCAS in Manuka this month, investigating "ruptures in perception and their potential to prompt new and unpreductable experiences. I take patterns from Islamic geometric decoration and use competing visual cues to hold these structures on the verge of collapse with tension between flatness and relief, between abstract form and spatial illusion," she says. Her intention is to "generate permanent states of doubt", through striking images. Shapes of Doubt is showing at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, 19 Furneaux Street, Manuka, until August 14.
The Book of Waiting
Recent ANU art school grad Catherine Freeman has an introspective new exhibition opening at Belconnen Community Service this week, as part the Emerging Artist Support Scheme: "There are times in life when your brain comprehends something that your heart cannot accept; this is the gap between knowledge and understanding," Freeman says. "Living in the gap, like being in limbo, is a time of waiting. The Book of Waiting is a journal - a walk through the process of reaching understanding. It documents a time when the things that are important in life stand out starkly and the whole world becomes black and white, hence the use of pen, ink and line." The Book of Waiting, by Catherine Freeman, opens August 9 at Belconnen Community Service, Swanson Court, Belconnen, and runs until August 26.
Poetry at the House
What with all this winter business (is anyone ready for spring yet), there's no better balm for the soul than a bit of midweek poetry, so head on over to this month's Poetry at the House session at University House on Wednesday. The reading will be of Russell Erwin's latest collection, Maps of Small Countries (also launched during the evening), followed by Kathy Kituai and Paul Menden reading in the second half: "Russell Erwin lives among the quiet pastures and circling blades of wind farms in the Bannister district where he spends his days fencing," say House organisers, while Kathy Kituai is described as "a poet, diarist, and founder of Limestone Tanka Poets and Kate's Kitchen, [who] has, at various times, facilitated creative writing courses in Scotland, SA, NSW, and the ACT." Meanwhile, Paul Munden is one of our own stable of Canberra-based poets working at the University of Canberra. Poetry at the House is at University House from 8.00pm, Wednesday, August 10. Admission $10/$5.
