Binge-watching, retro-style!
Golden age of television be damned – all TV is good at the National Film and Sound Archive! It's TV's diamond year, and the NFSA is celebrating in so many ways, but this week, it's a special evening of retro treasures and blasts from the past: "From hidden gems, to memorable moments, we've searched the NFSA vaults for clips so rare we've only just discovered some of them. Highlights include: the Bee Gees backing Johnny O'Keefe in a 1964 episode of Sing Sing Sing; Canberra's CTC7 children's show Meeting in the Middle with a young Shani Wood; or, for sports fans, Rod Marsh at the crease in the 1974 Gillette Cup. Joining us for the event are TV legends – Gold Logie award winning actress Lorrae Desmond, and Sale of the Century announcer Pete Smith. Down to earth at Nishi
South coast artist Nicole Grimm-Hewitt has a thought provoking new show opening next weekend at Nishi Gallery, examining our place on the planet and reminding us of the beauty that surrounds us: "Grimm-Hewitt's artwork recreates the patterns, shapes and colours that the land and ocean present to us. They remind us that we stand upon a living breathing planet that is constantly changing and repairing itself. Some of the patterns are naturally formed, but many are scars that we have inflicted. Sometimes it's not until we can physically see the magnitude of this, that we truly realise the impact we are having on the land beneath us and the waterways that surround us." Down_to_earth, by Nicole Grimm-Hewitt, opens November 24 at Nishi Gallery, 17 Kendall Lane, New Acton, and runs until December 11. Raw MOTIF at Belconnen
RAW Canberra
RAW Canberra - an independent arts organisation, for artists, by artists whose mission is to provide independent artists with "the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity" - has its last show-stopping showcase show on Friday night at Belconnen Arts Centre: "MOTIF will bring together 30+ local emerging artists spanning fashion, music, visual and performing arts, music and more, for a one night extravaganza at the Belconnen Arts Centre. MOTIF is the last in a series of six blockbuster emerging arts showcases to be run in Canberra by RAW:natural born artists in 2016 and this showcase is packed wall to wall with the city's best emerging creatives." Kiss the Joy
It's worth remembering that there's always something to enjoy, somewhere. In a new show at Belconnen Community Service, artist Vijaya Sen is dedicated to marking, recording and interpreting everyday moments that often disappear before they're acknowledged: "This exhibition celebrates the familiar yet significant moments which shape the everyday experience of suburban life - which nevertheless govern and define our lives… They are essentially transient moments, yet as the William Blake quote implies, it is critical that we recognise, enjoy, and even treasure them. Ultimately they are the moments which define us." Kiss the Joy As It Flies, by Vijaya Sen, is showing at Belconne Community Service, Swanson Circuit, Belconnen, until November 25.
Porcelain & Politics at the coast
There's a beautiful new ceramics show opening this week at Narek Galleries – a tiny converted church on the road to Bermagui on the south coast. Marianne Huhn has for some time been making functional ceramics with "distinct narrative surfaces. The drawn line and text combine to create themes and images ranging from architecture to political commentary". Her beautifully made porcelain domestic pots contain, on closer viewing, "potent messages of social justice". "The works have been made during our turbulent political period 2013 to 2016 - changes of PM, changes of Govt., seriously unpopular policies and budgets," says Karen O'Clery, of Narek. "The research for Marianne's PhD at RMIT began with another even more turbulent time, the Russian Revolution and how and why the potters at the time carried through their messages into their pots. She then moved on to the current situation in Australia." And they're beautiful! Porcelain & Politics, by Marianne Huhn, opens November 24 at Narek Galleries, Old Tanja Church, 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Road, Tanja, and runs until January 8.
Limits of analogue at PhotoAccess
There are both limits and possibilities when it comes to using obsolete media in art – especially photography. Two artists currently showing at PhotoAccess experiment with the limits of analogue film. In Finding Focus, London-based Australian artist Laura Hindmarsh "incorporates a 16mm performance film produced on the dry bed of Lake George with experimental photographic cyanotype and salt print images". And in Temporality, Sydney artist Enrico Scotece is showing experimental landscape photographs printed in the PhotoAccess darkroom: "Scotece builds his own pinhole cameras which he then places in trees and exposes a piece of film for extended time periods, lasting up to several months, capturing the sun's path across the sky. The unpredictable nature of this approach results in beautiful dreamlike renditions of landscape, full of intrigue and wonder." Finding Focus, by Laura Hindmarsh, and Temporality, by Enrico Scotece are showing at PhotoAccess, Manuka Arts Centre, Cnr Manuka Circle and New South Wales Crescent, Griffith, until November 27. Enrico Scotece will be giving a free artist talk on November 27 at 2pm.
