The exhibition KIRSTIE REA the land: a 20 year survey at Canberra Museum and Gallery provides a rare opportunity to experience the work of an artist and teacher who's contributed a great deal to the ACT's reputation as a world centre for contemporary glass art. The Canberra-born Rea often draws on her experience of the local landscape in her wor. The exhibition runs until August 20.
Aviary
Also on at CMAG is Aviary, an exhibition that, as the title suggests has a bird theme. It includes more than 70 works of art, most of them drawn from the CMAG collection but with some borrowed from private collections and one from the National Gallery. Among the works on display are paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, textiles, ceramics and artist books. It's on until July 30. For more information on both exhibitions visit cmag.com.au.
A Simply Divine Concert
The next performance in the Kangaroo Concert Series 2017 at Kangara Waters features a jazz trio. Theatre and cabaret performer Lisa McClelland, one of the Fabulous Miz Demeanours, will sing with John Black (piano and vocals), and Ben Schumann (drums). They'll be performing on Sunday, July 30 at 2.15pm (audience to be seated by 2pm). The concert is on in Cooinda Hall, Kangara Waters, 2 Joy Cummings Place, Belconnen. Picture book art
In the Imagine if ... exhibition, you can explore the original artworls from some of Australia's best-loved picture books. It's on from Monday until August at the Clive Price Suite, Building 1, University of Canberra, open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm. Canberra Community Chorale
The Canberra Community Chorale is a reincarnation of the University of Canberra Chorale. Since the beginning of the year the Chorale it has had a new director, AJ America ,who sings with Luminescence Chamber Ensemble and conducts the Luminescence Children's Choir. The Chorale plans to perform a new work, in November, Requiem by British contemporary composer Bob Chilcott, and is inviting new members to come and sing the work as well as other works planned for the future. The Chorale meets in the Cook Community Hall (old Cook School) on Fridays from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. The Chorale begins its second term of the year on Friday July 21, and welcomes new members to come and try for two weeks before joining. The Baroque Challenge
Handel in the Theatre is presenting its next Handel production, Esther (the composer's first English oratorio), in the Playhouse on October 28. Before that, however, it has another "production", its inaugural fundraising event, The Baroque Challenge. Wesley Music Centre events this week
On Wednesday at 12.40pm in the Lunchtime Live series, Eloise Fisher will perform a recital of unaccompanied music for clarinet highlighting a world premiere performance of A Day in the Life by American composer Bretton Brown as well as works by J.S. Bach, Bela Kovacs, and Serban Nichifor. Entry $10 (includes program and refreshments). On Friday at 7pm Kotaro Nagano, the winner of the second Australian International Chopin Piano Competition in 2014, will make his first appearance at the Wesley Music Centre, performing some of his favourite pieces from Chopin and Liszt. Confident Collecting
The next Confident Collecting session at M16 Artspace is on Monday July 17 from 6 to 8pm. The National Gallery of Australia's senior curator, Australian prints and drawing, Elspeth Pitt, will look at what makes prints intrinsically valuable and what attracts artists to the medium. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
